How we work
Eloquia is a one person consultancy that brings in counsel, experts and partner firms for each case. This page sets out how that works, how we treat the people we work with, and the commitments behind it.

1. Who does the work
Saqib Khan runs every case himself, from the first conversation to the final hearing. A specialist barrister works with him on every defence case from the outset. Where a case needs an expert witness, the regulated law firm or the criminal defence partner firm, he instructs them. He then supervises the work that comes back and stays your point of contact. As a result, you always know who is working on your matter and why.
2. Working with counsel, experts and partners
Everyone we instruct receives a written instruction setting out the work, the deadline and the fee before they start. We pay on agreed terms and on time. Our deadlines leave enough margin for people to do the work well. We do not expect replies outside working hours unless a hearing date leaves no choice. In addition, we tell expert witnesses that their duty is to the tribunal or court and not to us.
3. If Eloquia hires
Eloquia has no employees at present. If it takes on staff, it will advertise every role with its pay stated. Interviews will then follow a structured format scored against the work itself, and Eloquia will ask nobody to work unpaid as a trial. Flexible working requests will also start from a presumption in favour.
4. Inclusion
We treat every client, witness, complainant and colleague with the same respect. We also make reasonable adjustments for anyone who needs them. The Eloquia Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Pledge sets out the full commitment.
5. Balance
Defence work runs to deadlines set by others, and a doctor under investigation is often under strain. For that reason we plan work so that we meet deadlines without last minute pressure on the client or on the people we instruct. The detail is in the Eloquia Work-Life Balance Pledge.
6. Environment and community
Our environment and sustainability policy and the Eloquia Environmental Pledge set out how we keep our footprint small. What we do beyond paid work is in the Eloquia Social Impact Pledge.
7. Health and in-person meetings
Many of our clients work with patients who are unwell or vulnerable. Nobody from Eloquia attends a meeting or hearing in person while ill with anything transmissible. Instead, we move the meeting to video or rearrange it. A client who is unwell can ask us to do the same without any effect on their case.
