Environment and sustainability policy
The environmental footprint of a one person legal consultancy and the decisions that keep it small. It also explains how we weigh the energy cost of the tools we use.

1. Our footprint
One person leads Eloquia, so its footprint comes from a handful of sources. First is travel to clients, meetings and hearings. Next comes the electricity that computers, phones and the online services behind them use. Finally there are paper and printing, and the hardware we buy. We do not claim to be carbon neutral, and we do not buy offsets to make that claim.
2. Travel
Meetings take place by video where that serves the client as well as a room would. Where meeting in person serves the client better, we meet in person, and in a defence case that is often. We travel to hearings and meetings by rail where the journey and the timetable allow. Otherwise we go by car, as we also do when a client's case needs us to carry papers or arrive at short notice.
3. Paper
We prepare and share bundles electronically wherever the regulator, tribunal or court accepts them. As a result we print only what a hearing or a client needs on paper. We shred and recycle paper that carries client information.
4. Equipment and services
We keep computers and phones in use for as long as they work and are secure. Where it is practical we buy refurbished, and we send old devices for certified data wiping and recycling. When we choose an online service, we take the provider's published environmental record into account alongside security and data protection.
5. AI and energy
Generative AI tools use more energy per task than ordinary software. For that reason we use them where they save time on work that would otherwise take hours. We do not use them for tasks a search or a template does as well. Our responsible AI policy governs how we use them.
6. Review
We review this policy every year. The Eloquia Environmental Pledge sets out the public promises that sit behind it.
