Fees and funding
Fixed fees for every stage, stated plus VAT
You see the price of each stage of your case before it begins. You pay for one stage at a time. Every fee on this page is stated plus VAT and includes a specialist barrister from the outset.

Fee menu
Fixed fees by stage
| Stage | Fee |
|---|---|
| Response to a GMC concern at triage | £2,500 plus VAT |
| GMC investigation to Rule 7 | £9,500 plus VAT |
| Interim orders tribunal | £4,500 plus VAT for each hearing |
| Tribunal hearing | £8,000 plus VAT for preparation, then £4,000 plus VAT for each hearing day |
| High Court appeal | £25,000 plus VAT, through a regulated law firm we work with |
| Police interview and pre charge representations | £15,000 plus VAT, through our criminal defence partner firm |
| Employment tribunal defence | From £15,000 plus VAT |
Some matters have no set fee on the menu: inquests, NHS disciplinary matters and performers list action, and cases before other healthcare regulators. For these we quote a fixed fee, plus VAT, once we have seen the papers.
Every fee is stated plus VAT and includes a specialist barrister, whom we involve from the outset to give you additional support and advice. Fees do not include additional expenses such as expert fees, which we quote separately. The police interview and pre charge fee is the criminal defence partner firm's fee for its own work. It is agreed with that firm and paid to it, and Eloquia takes no share of it and pays nothing for the introduction.
Counsel from the outset
A specialist barrister on your case from the first step
We involve a specialist barrister in your case from the outset. That gives you additional support and advice from your first response onwards, not only once a hearing is in the diary. The barrister reads the papers with us and tests the strategy. If your case reaches a tribunal, the barrister is ready to present it.
Every fee on this page includes counsel's work. We do not add a separate charge for it at any stage.
What the fees do not include is additional expenses, such as the fee of an expert witness. We quote those separately, agree them with you, and instruct nobody until you have approved the cost.
How you pay
Staged payment against the menu
You pay for your case one stage at a time, against the menu above. Before each stage begins we confirm in writing what it covers and what it costs. You then decide whether to go ahead. If your case closes at triage or at Rule 7, you pay nothing for the stages that did not happen. Our article on how staged pricing works explains the approach in more detail.
We do not act on conditional fee agreements.
Funding and cover
Funding options in development
Eloquia accepts staged payment. We are developing a fee funding facility and a defence costs insurance product with insurance and finance partners. Details will follow.
If your insurer or defence organisation has refused or limited your cover, read our page on when your insurer or defence organisation will not cover you.
Questions and answers
Questions doctors ask
How much does it cost to defend a GMC investigation?
Eloquia charges a fixed fee for each stage, every one stated plus VAT. A response at triage costs £2,500 plus VAT and a GMC investigation to Rule 7 costs £9,500 plus VAT. An interim orders tribunal costs £4,500 plus VAT for each hearing. A tribunal hearing costs £8,000 plus VAT for preparation, then £4,000 plus VAT for each hearing day. A High Court appeal costs £25,000 plus VAT. Each fee includes a specialist barrister from the outset, and we quote expert fees separately. Our article on fixed fees in regulatory defence explains the menu.
Is the barrister's fee included?
Yes. We involve a specialist barrister in your case from the outset, and every fee includes counsel's work, with no separate charge at any stage. The barrister reads the papers with us, tests the strategy and, if your case reaches a tribunal, is ready to present it. What the fees do not include is additional expenses, such as the fee of an expert witness. We quote those separately, agree them with you and instruct nobody until you have approved the cost. Our guide to choosing a barrister for your hearing explains what to look for.
What will a GMC case cost if it goes to a hearing?
That depends on the stages it reaches, because you pay only for the stages that happen. Take a case that goes to a five day tribunal after an investigation, with one interim orders hearing along the way. The fees are £9,500 for the investigation, £4,500 for the interim orders hearing, £8,000 for preparation and £20,000 for five hearing days, a total of £42,000 plus VAT, with counsel included throughout. If the case examiners close the case at Rule 7, the total is £9,500 plus VAT. We quote expert fees separately. Our article on staged pricing works through the example.
How do I pay?
You pay for your case one stage at a time, against the fee menu. Before each stage begins we confirm in writing what it covers and what it costs, and you then decide whether to go ahead. If your case closes at triage or at Rule 7, you pay nothing for the stages that did not happen. We do not act on conditional fee agreements, so our fee does not depend on the outcome. Our guide to how staged pricing works explains the approach.
Is funding available for my defence?
Eloquia accepts staged payment, so you pay for each stage of your case before it begins rather than for the whole case in advance. We are also developing a fee funding facility and a defence costs insurance product with insurance and finance partners. Details will follow. Our guide to how staged pricing works explains the payment model.
What do police interview, inquest and employment work cost?
Police interview and pre charge representations cost £15,000 plus VAT, through our criminal defence partner firm. Employment tribunal defence costs from £15,000 plus VAT. Inquests, NHS disciplinary matters, performers list action and cases before other healthcare regulators have no set fee on the menu, so we quote a fixed fee, plus VAT, once we have seen the papers, and we confirm it in writing before work begins. Every fee includes a specialist barrister from the outset, and we quote expert fees separately. The police interview and pre charge fee is the criminal defence partner firm's fee for its own work. It is agreed with that firm and paid to it, and Eloquia takes no share of it and pays nothing for the introduction.
